Xeomin in Spokane Valley
Xeomin is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to soften the appearance of certain facial lines. It is the third of the three wrinkle relaxers carried at Luminess Lounge, and like Botox and Dysport it is a formulation of botulinum toxin injected into specific facial muscles to temporarily reduce the activity that creates certain lines. It is, however, manufactured differently from the other two — and that difference is worth understanding before your appointment. As with the other products, the choice of whether Xeomin is right for you is made in person, not on a page.
What Xeomin is and how it works
Xeomin is a formulation of botulinum toxin. When injected into a specific facial muscle, it temporarily reduces that muscle's activity, softening the lines the muscle creates when it contracts. The effect is temporary, and the muscle activity returns over time. As with any wrinkle relaxer, it works on lines caused by movement; lines present at rest may need a different approach.
Xeomin is formulated without accessory proteins
Some botulinum toxin products contain accessory proteins alongside the active component. Xeomin is formulated without those proteins. That is a genuine difference in manufacturing, and it is sometimes discussed in relation to patients who feel they have stopped responding to another product over time.
Whether that applies to any individual patient is a clinical question for the consultation. It depends on your history, your anatomy, and what you are trying to achieve. We do not claim that Xeomin prevents reduced response, that it treats reduced response, or that it is better for anyone. It is one option among three — and whether it is the right one for you is a decision made in person.
You can read about the other two on the Botox and Dysport pages, or see the full range on the wrinkle relaxers page.
Areas treated at this practice
- Frown lines between the brows — the vertical lines from frowning or concentrating.
- Forehead lines — the horizontal lines across the forehead.
- Lines at the outer corners of the eyes — the crow's feet lines from smiling or squinting.
Who it is and isn't for
Xeomin is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is not appropriate for people with certain neuromuscular conditions. It is not appropriate when there is an active skin infection or inflammation at the planned injection site. Anyone with a known allergy to Xeomin or any of its components should not have it.
Some patients ask about Xeomin because they feel their response to another product has changed. That is a reasonable thing to raise — but it does not mean Xeomin is automatically the answer. The decision is clinical, and being told honestly what is and isn't appropriate is part of what the consultation is for.
This may not be right for you if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have a neuromuscular condition.
- You have an active skin infection at the injection site.
- You have a known allergy to botulinum toxin products.
- The lines you want to treat are visible at rest, not only on movement.
What the appointment involves
Keanna evaluates you — in person or via face-to-face telehealth, whichever suits you. She takes your history, asks about previous wrinkle relaxer treatments, and examines your face at rest and in movement. She decides whether Xeomin or a different product is appropriate, and if so, where the injections go for your anatomy. You are told what to expect afterward and how to reach the practice if something concerns you.
Side effects and aftercare
Temporary redness, swelling or bruising at the injection sites is common. Headache can occur. Less commonly, the effect can spread to a nearby muscle and cause temporary drooping of the brow or eyelid. You are told about these before treatment and given aftercare instructions and a way to reach the practice.
When Keanna treats you herself, she evaluates you as part of your care. When a registered nurse performs your treatment, Keanna completes a good faith exam first — in person or via face-to-face telehealth, whichever suits you — to meet Washington’s safety guidelines. Either way, the person responsible for your care is the one who decides whether the treatment is appropriate for you.
Questions and answers
What makes Xeomin different from the other wrinkle relaxers?
Xeomin is an FDA-approved prescription wrinkle relaxer — a formulation of botulinum toxin made by a different manufacturer than Botox or Dysport. It is manufactured without the accessory proteins found in some other botulinum toxin products, which is a genuine difference in formulation.
What does 'formulated without accessory proteins' mean?
Some botulinum toxin products contain accessory proteins alongside the active component. Xeomin is formulated without those proteins. That is a difference in how the product is manufactured, and it is sometimes discussed in connection with patients who feel their response to another product has changed over time.
Is Xeomin better if I have stopped responding to another product?
That depends on your individual history and is a clinical question for the consultation. We do not claim that Xeomin prevents or treats reduced response, or that it is better for anyone. Whether Xeomin is appropriate for you is decided in person, based on your anatomy and what you are trying to achieve.
What areas do you treat with Xeomin?
Frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and lines at the outer corners of the eyes — the same areas treated with the other wrinkle relaxers at this practice.
What happens at the appointment?
Keanna evaluates you — in person or via face-to-face telehealth — takes your history, examines your face at rest and in movement, and decides whether Xeomin — or a different product — is appropriate for you. If it is, injection points are chosen for your anatomy, and you are told what to expect afterward.
How is the decision made between the three products?
It is a clinical decision based on your anatomy, your history with wrinkle relaxers, and what you are trying to achieve. Keanna carries Botox, Dysport and Xeomin so the choice fits you, rather than you being fitted to a single option.
